Switzerland: The Alps

October 1

This was a very dramatic day. I saw the most incredible things I have ever seen in my life, but things couldn’t have gone more wrong. The entire family went to Interlaken, then to Murren…the most darling town on the side of a mountain in the Alps.

After walking through Murren, we took a tram up the Schilthorn and had lunch on top of the mountain at the Piz Gloria, a restaurant that revolves in a complete circle every hour. It was the most breathtaking sight I have ever seen. I knew the alps were going to be amazing, but a part of me thought that growing up close to beautiful mountains would make the Alps seem less majestic…I was wrong. They were incredible.

From lunch on top of the Schilthorn we took a tram back to Murren and then to the town of Gimmelwald. Gimmelwald was very cool and quaint. We got to talk to a cheesemaker in his tiny cheese house and see and taste his cheese and we got a good feel for the tiny town. It was fun. The kids played on the slide there and James had a nasty fall off the stroller. Then we made our way back home. Both boys were asleep in our arms by the time we made it to the train. It was a long and exhausting day.

Amidst all the awesomeness of the things we saw was a whole lot of drama that included forgetting our swiss pass, then losing one of the $200.00 tickets we had to buy to pay for all the tickets our swiss pass would have normally covered. Half of our time in Murren was spent running back and forth through the town trying to find the other ticket that had fallen out of my back pocket. Then James added to the chaos of the situation by throwing food at the restaurant and being a complete monster at all the right times.
